Your Baby’s 3 to 6 Month Milestones: What to Expect

Writer: Dr. YuliDr. Yuli

The 3 to 6-month stage is an exciting time in your baby’s development! They’re becoming more active, aware, and social, hitting key milestones in movement, vision, and communication. Here’s what to expect during this stage:

Motor Skills: Strength & Coordination

By 4 months, your baby may start rolling from tummy to back, a big step in mobility! Tummy time is still important at this stage, helping strengthen their neck, shoulders, and core muscles. You’ll also notice your baby reaching for and grasping objects, like rattles and toys.

By 6 months, many babies can sit with little or no support, an exciting sign of growing independence! They’ll also begin using one hand to reach for objects and transferring items between hands, which helps build coordination for future skills like self-feeding and playing.

Vision & Social Development: Awareness & Interaction

Your baby’s world is becoming clearer! Over these months, they’ll track moving objects more smoothly and recognize familiar faces—don’t be surprised if they light up when they see you! By 4 months, they’ll start responding to smiles with their own social smiles, and by 6 months, they may show excitement when you enter the room.

At this stage, babies are learning how their actions can get a response from others. Peek-a-boo, talking, and making silly faces can help strengthen this connection.

Communication & Sleep Patterns: Babbling & Sleep Changes

Your baby is starting to explore their voice! Around 4 months, they’ll begin cooing, laughing, and babbling in response to your voice. Talking and reading to them regularly helps support early language development.

One big change during this time is the 4-month sleep regression—a normal phase where your baby’s sleep cycles mature, sometimes leading to more night wakings. While this can be challenging, sticking to a consistent bedtime routine can help them adjust. By 6 months, some babies begin sleeping for longer stretches, but every baby is different!
