Summer fun is in full swing — and whether your little one is beach-bound, poolside, or splashing in a backyard kiddie pool, it’s the perfect time for a quick safety reset.

At Yuli MD Pediatrics, we believe that prevention doesn’t have to be complicated — it just has to be consistent. Here’s how to keep your family safe under the sun and near the water this season:

💧 Water Safety Reminders

Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death in children ages 1 to 4 — and it’s often silent and fast. But simple layers of protection make a big difference:

  • Always supervise children near any water — even bathtubs.

  • Stay within arm’s reach of little ones.

  • Make sure home pools are gated on all four sides with a self-latching gate.

  • Designate a "Water Watcher" at gatherings to prevent distractions.

  • Enroll kids in age-appropriate swim lessons (starting around age 1).

Visibility Matters: What Color Is Your Child’s Swimsuit?

Did you know that swimsuit color can impact how easily your child is seen underwater? In pools, bright neon colors like orange, pink, and lime green stand out the most. In lakes or oceans, darker or muted colors can become nearly invisible beneath the surface. Choose high-contrast swimwear, and avoid white, blue, or dull greens, especially in natural bodies of water.

Sun Safety Tips

Sunburns in childhood can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life — but daily sun protection adds up.

  • Babies under 6 months should stay out of direct sunlight.

  • Use broad-spectrum mineral-based SPF 30+ sunscreen for older children.

  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours (or after swimming).

  • Don’t forget ears, feet, scalp, and back of the neck.

  • Dress children in UPF 50+ protective swimwear, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses.

Pack a summer “go bag” with sunscreen, snacks, water, backup clothes, and first-aid basics so you’re always ready.
